In the late 1960s, Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot created one of the most remarkable artistic encounters in modern French cultural history. At a moment when French cinema, popular music, and youth culture were undergoing profound transformation, these two icons—one a revolutionary songwriter-poet, the other a mythic figure of European cinema—met in the recording studio and produced a body of work that defined an era. Between 1967 and 1968, at the historic Philips/Fontana Studios in Paris, Gainsbourg composed and recorded with Bardot four tracks that would become emblematic of their time: • “Bonnie and Clyde” — a minimalist, hypnotic ballad that merges American outlaw mythology with French pop surrealism. • “Harley Davidson” — Bardot’s rebellious hymn to speed and freedom, conceived entirely by Gainsbourg and performed with her unmistakable cinematic aura. • “Comic Strip” — a playful experiment where pop music meets graphic-art rhythm, revealing Gainsbourg’s instinct for avant-garde storytelling. • “Je t’aime… moi non plus” — the original 1967 Bardot version, a whispered dialogue of intimacy and transgression, later re-recorded with Jane Birkin after its release was halted. These songs are more than recordings. They are documents of a meeting between two artistic worlds—Gainsbourg’s radical poetry and Bardot’s cinematic mythology. Their collaboration marked a turning point in both artists’ careers, blending chanson, pop art, eroticism, and political subtext in ways the French public had never seen before. This video revisits those sessions not as celebrity anecdotes, but as a chapter in the cultural history of Europe: a moment when music, cinema, and personal destiny converged, and when Serge Gainsbourg—arguably the most innovative French composer of his generation—reinvented the very language of popular music.
